She should have said: Give the girl the world and she can conquer the right shoes! My Prince Charming has whisked me off (or sent me on) some great international travels where I\u2019ve purchased footwear that reads like a travel guide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Guadalajara:<\/em><\/strong> Peep-toe, laced black stilettos of rugged black leather<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Tokyo:<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>Traditional <em>geta<\/em> sandals lacquered lucky red<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Rome<\/em><\/strong>: Baggy ankle boots in buff rawhide-style suede<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Buenos Aires:<\/em><\/strong> Hot-orange leather Latino platforms with ankle strap and wooden heels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Sorrento:<\/em><\/strong> Chocolate calfskin high-heeled boots lined with fleece<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Paris:<\/em><\/strong> Sparkly copper flats with pointed toes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The shoe caddy of my mind recalls more homely items that signify domestic joys:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Slopping through puddles<\/em><\/strong> in the rubber boots of my Winnipeg childhood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Climbing snowbanks<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>in mukluks brought back from northern Canadian Natives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Walking the aisle<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>in satin pumps to meet my groom (actually, it wasn\u2019t an aisle but a bridge Dad built for the occasion over the swimming pool in the family home)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Rounding up cattle<\/em><\/strong> in my first riding boots, purchased in Swift Current<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Pacing hospital hallways<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>in bedroom slippers through early labour contractions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Hiking the Great Sand Hills of Saskatchewan<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>in running shoes with my kids, avoiding cactus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I own shoes I haven\u2019t yet worn: wedges that match the dress that almost fits me, cross-trainers for the sport I hope to take up soon, the <em>wild<\/em> faux-leopard pair pictured above (just waiting for an excuse to slip onto my feet&#8211;and, yes, those are <em>copper<\/em> heels!). I own shoes that have worn me out: the black patent pinchers and the handmade huaraches that <em>should<\/em> be comfortable.
